WEST ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – Brush fires have been breaking out all across the Twin Tiers today and with a red flag warning still in effect until 9PM, the wildfires can still pop up at anytime.
It doesn’t take much to cause a spark on a day like today and fires have been popping up since the later stages of the morning. Red flag warning are still in effect for our area until tonight when the risk will finally settle down. Firefighters and emergency management offices have had a very busy day.
WENY was able to reach out today to Mark Cicora who serves as the Director Fire & Emergency Management of Chemung County. On the wildfire situation this time of the year he commented, "This time of the year produces a unique situation weather-wise and fire fighting wise when it comes to wildfires."
"It is dry and all of the debris including leaves, twigs, brush tree limbs, trees themselves. All of those materials are very very dry this time of the year. Brush fires by their nature are very dangerous and they are highly unpredictable. Wind changes can change the direction of the path of the fire at a moment’s notice. I can tell you from personal experience that they will chase you as fast as you can run."
For these types of fires it takes only takes something as small as a match or cigarette butt to turn into a blaze.
